Machining & experimentation

As can be seen from the photograph, some of the forward sections of the chassis are being machined. The UHMPWE machines very nicely, however it has a tendency to attract dirt.

As such, the initial model (for testing) will be white, but the final unit will be black & yellow. Some issues arose jigging the pieces, as both sides (and periphery) of the material was to be machined. An initial structure will be ready next week.

Maufacture

Work is continuing on the machining of the new robot. Pictured left is the CNC working on a section of the new canopy. The use of Pro/Manufacture allow for manufacture of much more intricate shapes than was previously possible.

In this case, the canopies must have bevelled edges, to provide a better look and this is what is being machined (at left).

UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) was selected for construction of the robot due to its easy machining properties, and not least of all cost (it is substantially cheaper than acetol). The necessary materials were obtained on Monday, so manufacture is underway.
